Race #8 of the BikeReg.com Super-8 Series
Conditions: Cool and cloudy.
Bob, Sean, Nate and Jackie lined up to represent the team at Rockburn Cyclocross. The course was one of the more technical ones of the season with plenty of dicey off-camber turns, a little single track, a sand pit and log-hop in the middle of a tight corner, mixed in with a long, grinding climbs to test the rider’s limits.
Sean got things started in the morning. He got off to his usual excellent start, moved up in the technical sections and back in the grinding ones and finished 24th out of 74 starters.
Having started in the back the week before, Bob enjoyed the view from his 3rd row starting position much better. He passed a few folks early on the concrete starting stretch. He found his best tactic was to maintain position in the technical sections and move up as much as possible on the long, grinding hill. Despite an ever-tightening calf cramp, he was able claw up to a small group battling for 7th place on the last lap. He was not able to leap-frog around many in the group, and finished 11th, just outside his 2nd top-1o in the last two races.
Women’s Cat 4
Jackie put together her best performance of the season. She has improved tremendously throughout the season and was able to finish on the same lap as the leaders for the first time. She even put in a dig at the finish to hold off a women with whom she had been battling late in the race and finished 21st. Way to go, Jackie! See her full race report on her personal blog.
Nate would race the 3/4 race in the afternoon and place 28th, but that was really just a warm-up for is main race, the Tandem!
Nate had been working with tandem partner, Tim Kelley, to perfect the always challenging mounting/dismounting process in any cross race and they had gotten pretty smooth, but race day would be a different challenge. Adorned in their Sunday Finest, Nate and Tim were ready to go.
They may not have looked the part, but the boys were AERO! and they were there to win. They raced hard and were narrowly defeated by a team of strong Cat 2 racers.
Look for the VWS team next at the South Germantown Cyclocross race on 11/23.
