Conditions: Dry and cool.
Anne Arundel Cyclocross, race #5 in the Sportif Cup series, was held on a new venue this year. The terrain was fairly non-descript, which sometimes makes for some of the hardest racing since there are not any obstacles or hills to break up the packs.
Eric kicked off the team’s participation with the Cat 3/4 35+ race. He had earned the #1 bib and front row starting position for having the highest series points among the registered racers. Avoiding the mechanical snafus of last week’s race, he slotted into a top 5 position early in the first lap. With one rider off the front from the gun, he soon settled into a 2-man battle for 2nd place with the DCCX winner from the previous week. After taking turns trying unsuccessfully to drop one another, they came to the line together for a spectator-entertaining sprint with Eric earning the 3rd step on the podium.
Chris D would follow in the next heat in the Cat 3/4 race. With a late registration date, Chris would be starting from the 4th row. He worked his way up steadily through the 45 minute race and finished in 12th, just a sniff from the top 10. With the dry course and thick grass, he didn’t need any Wicked Wash this week!
The Sportif series runs the Cat 4/5 race in the afternoons which appealed to Mike’s hibernating schedule, so he jumped into the 3pm start. He fought his way through the field on the twisty course to finish top 15. It was a good experience to continue to improve his roadie skills on the dirt.
